Whilst out shopping, we were browsing through the shelves of books at a shop called 'The Works' on the high street, and came across one called, Wartime Farm.
We had previously watched and enjoyed the TV programme of the same name, so we jumped at the chance and purchased the acompanying book, featuring Ruth Goodman, Peter Ginn and Alex Langlands.
Wartime Farm is full of smashing tales, sweet wartime recipes and stories about what happened during the war years, in Great Britain.

It is a good book, full of little bits and pieces from how to do your 'victory roll' hairstyles and make up tips from the era.
We found some of the information is quite compelling, such as the part about all farm land being surveyed by the government to make sure it was being used effectively to cut out inefficiency.
In some cases, the land would be taken off the owner and requisitioned, then placed into the hands of a farmer of their choosing. Every bit of land had to be used for food production. (Britain as a whole, is just over 57 million acres).

A large mobilisation of the population happened. Whilst the men were sent off to war, the ones left behind were rallied together, the ladies working in various jobs that were once only the domain of men.
Suddenly, ladies were chopping down trees (Lumber Jills), Land Girls, Idle Women, who worked on narrowboats relaying supplies/cargo, loading and unloading the boats, to the ladies now working in factories keeping the war effort going.
For the first time ever, national service was compulsory for both men and women alike.

All in all, the 249 pages are full of lots interesting subjects, with some lovely photographs and illustrations throughout.
If you are interested in this subject, then this is definitely the book for you. You won't be disappointed!
