We have been to many places in pursuit of this delicious pastime, over that time, too. Sadly, some places are much better than others.
Some give very good value for money, and some seem to fall short of that, in my humble opinion. (You may disagree, and that is absolutely fine, too).
I won't be naming names, because that would lead to all sorts of problems, as you can imagine, but I will explain what I look for when searching on the internet for a nice afternoon tea.
It is very important to scrutinise the menu in depth, to see exactly what you will be getting.
Not all afternoon teas are equal, at all. Some are very pricey, and you get little food, for too much money.
I always look for a good selection of sandwiches. I would say a minimum of four different sandwiches is what I would expect.
For example, one salmon and cucumber, one ham and mustard, one egg and cress, and one coronation chicken sandwich.
Some may differ and actually add more things to the sandwich/savoury selection, which is excellent!
The next layer on the cake stand, is the scone section.
I would expect no less than one fruit scone, and one plain scone, per person.
Served with clotted cream and jam.
Many times I have been for afternoon tea and there was only one scone per person. For me, this falls short, I have to say.
My reason for saying that is quite simply that I often finish a one scone afternoon tea, and feel as though I am not quite full. That extra scone really does make all the difference in the world!
I would expect a minimum of 3 different servings and a small trifle, or a 4th cake option.(i.e. 4 small desserts).
That concludes my recommendation for a lovely and enjoyable afternoon tea.
You may well be full with less food than this, but I would rather have slightly too much, than not enough, especially when one is paying some of the prices for an afternoon tea!
You can always ask for a cake box to take home what you can not eat!
(This is my opinion. Opinions may vary)
That's all for now!
