Address: Mill Lane, Shenton, Nr Nuneaton, Market Bosworth CV13 6BZ, England. We decided to visit the Whitemoors Antiques, Crafts and Tea Rooms on Friday 29th January, 2016. Besides having a good look around the various rooms containing antiques, our main intention was to have Afternoon Tea. On approaching the tea rooms, one could clearly hear quite a cacophony of voices coming from behind the door, which surprised us, giving the rural setting of this location, and it being a Friday. On entering, it was very busy indeed and we saw that there were actually only two tables left! We sat at one of the remaining tables, and it was at this point it was apparent that 'Afternoon Tea' was not on going to be happening today for us. Unfortunately, as we now know, this is not the place to just decide to turn up to and expect Afternoon Tea! After perusing the literature regarding having to pre book and pay a 50% deposit on booking, (for 'Afternoon Tea'), we decided to settle upon what was on the main menue and specials board, instead. We chose sandwiches and tea for two, which arrived after about 20 minutes. We watched as food was brought out to other tables, and remarked on how well presented it all was, and how appetising it looked. The people sat on other tables were clearly enjoying the meals that they had chosen. Our sanwiches were very tasty indeed and very enjoyable. Having sampled those, and a slice of cake, which was deliciously moist (of which there were about 5 or 6 to choose from) we had no doubt that the 'Afternoon Tea' would probably be very nice too. There are three 'Afternoon Tea' menus to choose from and the prices range from £10 per person, up to £18pp depending on what you require from the choices menues. All in all, we had a lovely lunch and the service was pleasant and staff were dressed smartly. Their food hygiene rating was 5/5 (and was clearly displayed upon the wall). But how did we rate the Whitemoor Tea Rooms? Our rating for food is 7.5 out of 10 Our rating for service 6/10 (There were only two people waiting on tables and taking orders, it was very busy and we felt another person would have made a big difference). All in all it was good value for money, with averrage prices for food and drinks, we thought. Well worth a visit of you find yourself in the area. Afternoon Tea is available Monday to Saturday. As of Jaunuary 2016, myself and Lord Bloomfield will occasionally be dropping into various tea shops & rooms, the length and breadth of the United Kingdom.
This, of course, is a very lovely way to seeing new places, as well as sampling & experiencing the various delights of the afternoon tea's on offer from small independent retailers, hotels and other more specialist retailers. We have already reviewed "Bettys" of Harrogate and we now excitedly look forward to taking afternoon tea in other locations throughout the UK. We shall be judging things such as quality of service and the standard of the food served. I am sure this will be very interesting! So as the saying goes, "Watch this space"... When one partakes in afternoon tea, it is expected that scones, [pronounced "Skons"], are very much part of the repertoire of food which adorns the elegant cake stand which is brought to your table. But have we given much though about how many different varieties of scones there are actually out there? One can find the following, in recipie books.. Rich Scones Plain Scones Victoria Scones Cheese Scones Dropped Scones Potato Scones Welsh Scones Griddle Scones So recently I have been thumbing through a lot of old recipies, indeed, vintage recipies, for cakes and things of that manner, and I fell upon an old recipie my Grandmother used to make. This recipie is for "Victoria Scones". 8 Glace cherries 2 Oz(50g) Sugar 1/2 teaspoon of Salt 8Oz(200g)Self Raising Flour 2)z(50g) Lard or Margerine 1 Large Egg combined with milk to yeild 1/4 of a pint of liquid. Save a little back, for brushing onto the tops of the scones later on. Do not forget to pre heat your oven before placing your scones into it. Method 1. Combine salt, flour and fat, rubbling well together. 2. Add egg, milk and sugar, mix into a soft dough. 3. Place onto a floured clean surface and kneed together, then divide into 4 pieces. 4. Roll out your 4 pieces until they are approx 1/2 inch in thickness. 5. Place onto a pre greased baking tray. Cut a "x"cross across the top of each scone, so that you can devide them into another 4 when cooked. 6. Brush each scone with the remaining egg & milk, then place a cherry on top of each scone. 7. Place into a pre heated oven, gas mark 6, 200c 400f for 10 to 15 minutes. Enjoy! They are almost a 'must have' for afternoon tea, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, or just as a special treat with your cup of tea or coffee. They taste simply devine with their flavoured centres. I recently hosted a "Vintage Tea Party" themed birthday celebration and amongst the other delightful finger cakes and treats, macarons played a very colourful and tasty addition to the proceedings. They can be purchased online and in some supermarkets. I have personally seen them in Lidl. Sometimes they are amongst the specialist 'Delux' range of foods, or in the freezer department. We arrived at around midday and already there were people queuing up outside waiting to be seated. We were probably about the twentieth or so in the line. It didn't take more than about fifteen minutes to be ushered inside and then down to our table, on a basement level, within the building. There is a wonderful grace and elegance to the building and interior. Everything is of great quality, right down to the silverwear, tea pots and Arthur Price cutlery, which bestow all tables. The staff are turned out admirably, with crisp white cotton shirts, and clean white aprons, and deliver a second to none service to the customer. There were three of us in our party, two of which were having the 'afternoon tea' and one who ordered something different from the main menu. The first thing to arrive was our tea, which was impeccably served in silver tea pots,(one for each person, plus a water pot), with white bone china 'Royal Doulton' tea cups and saucers. Our cake stand full of delights arrived shortly afterwards, with three tiers of food which were arranged, starting on the bottom layer, with a selection of sandwiches, all with the crusts removed, and consisted of egg mayonaise with cress, salmon, chicken and ham. The second tier had scones, with fresh thick cream and strawberry jam, served in pots. The third tier consisted of various fruit tarts and coffee and chocolate slices, [apparently we should have had macaroons, but we were informed by our waitress that they had been substituted, because they had run out, which is a shame, because they are so beautiful]. All in all it was an extremely enjoyable experience. The overall atmosphere was of tranquility and the staff made everyone feel quite special, I thought. If you have never experienced 'afternoon tea' before, and you find yourself in the Yorkshire region, then you could hardly pick a better place to start, than Bettys. It offers you everything that you would expect of such an establishemt, for the 'total experience' of the quintessential English afternoon tea! Bettys |
